Here is an excerpt from the character “Shrinking” I used to be sophisticated. My husband and I traveled and attended theatre and conferences internationally. I performed on Broadway and received glowing reviews from the New York Times and when I went to Nobu I always got a good table. Last week, I was turned away from Le Cirque. I had flown back to New York to meet with my agent for the first time since the baby. The sitter cancelled last minute and so I had to bring him with me to my lunch meeting. No problem. My agent hasn't seen Ben yet and besides we’ve brought him to tons of restaurants and he’s been great. But when I arrived the hostess pointed down at the carseat on the floor near my legs and said, “Um, Miss, Is that with you?” And when I replied, “Yes.” She said, “Oh, I’m sorry, we have a strict policy. No babies in the dining room.” Just at that moment, Felix, my agent arrives. “Oh, is he here to pick it up and take it away with him?” “No, ‘it’ is with me and ‘it’ is staying.” I respond, pulling myself up to my full stature, looking down at her blond scrawny Mlana Blanik stiletto heeled ass. The baby starts to sense that I am tensing. His bottom lips starts to quiver threatening to let out a cry, which only reinforces her position. The manager comes out to talk to us and all but literally tells us that we are disturbing the other customers and must vacate the premises immediately. In my past life, if Felix and I had flashed the room after setting it on fire, we probably still would have gotten a good table close to the waterfall. Nice start to the business meeting I had hoped would re-launch my acting career. Over lunch at Nick’s Diner, Felix asked me if motherhood was what I expected it to be. I told him that it was as if I had rehearsed for months for the role of Antigone, and then upon arriving onstage opening night I found myself welcomed by a crowd expecting me to perform the entire play in the original Greek.
